Hey, thanks Kim for spamming everyone about that nifty little poll on the sidebar. Now we’re seeing some activity there! Now that people are voting, why not take the opportunity to put a reply down here and tell us why you chose the option you did?
Edit: Seriously, put some commentary on here, people! I’d really like to know who’s voting. I’m fairly certain that there’s been some votes from the Schlock Mercenary forum (I don’t know any Comcast users, so that’s the best explaination I’ve got). Won’t you please satisfy my curiousity?
Further edit: Also, if you can’t vote because someone else voted from your system and you’re stuck holding the magic cookie, post a reply (like several other people have done) and I’ll use my admin-fu to vote for you.
I am unfortuately so terrible at using computers that i can’t figure out how to vote. So now I will vote via a “REPLY”.
Give Brayden 3 votes from me, because I’m your brother and I had to share a room with you for something like 8 years.
Ok give it 4.
Well I think you picked some really good names. Tough to choose just one. Dean and I had two for Sydney the other was Dalaney. But Dean got to choose between the two after she was born because he was the first to see her. I have one you probably haven’t heard before it’s Zepher. The first and only time I heard it my reaction was “That’s different” (meaning weired). But it has grown on me Dean and I never forgot that kids name and we have never heard it since. My advice is to write the full name on a piece of paper and put it on the fridge. If it’s a boy he will have that full name for the rest of his life so make sure it sounds and looks good all put together. Imagine job interviews……ok I know along way down the road. I guess think of the playground and preschool. Best of luck in your search.
Tom: I added a vote on your behalf to the poll. I’ll keep your other three votes in my head.
Tel: That’s a good idea. I think for preschool the most important thing is to have a name that doesn’t rhyme with anything embarassing.
This is the coolest idea I’ve ever seen to figure out names! Very tough choice but I like Brayden… but because I’m never having any more children, you can use my Brennan Brody if you want to! I absolutely love that name! Whatever the name you guys choose I know it’ll be perfect for your little bundle of joy. Lydia is so cute for a girl-awww! Well Love ya!
I vote Zaphod, but Kevin already voted so I cant.
Thanks holmes.
Chuck: Your vote is in.
Hi Kim and Ryan!
This is such an awesome idea! All the names that you two chose are really cool. I voted for Malachi its a really nice name and it means messenger of God, also its unique but not out there. My second favorite was Selwyn , but like I said all the names are great and I think Lydia for a baby girl is just adorable!
Take care guys and good luck!
I think Selwyn is doomed as a “second choice” option. It’s definitely mine. I wish I’d found a poll plugin that allowed a weighted vote option. I understand that they do that in some countries with multi-party systems to avoid strategic voting resulting in skewed results.
Hellooo, ok, despite my efforts to “fool” my computer and vote multiple times… it just did’t seem to work. I voted Zachary. I do like Selwyn but my mind keeps thinking that it is a girls name for some reason. Originality is key for sure though! I like the “name on the fridge” idea. Maybe the celebs have been looking at their shopping list on their fridges too often.. hence Apple and Coco. haha
cheers!
Megan: You can’t fool the computer because you aren’t supposed to fool your computer. I know how you really voted. It’s okay, I forgive you because you were the first to vote for the name you chose.
change my vote to brayden
Chuck: Fine, be that way.
Ok, Tom left that last reply, and he put the name he wants, I actually told him to put Zachary. But hes a loser so yeah.
Wait, so did you want me to change it, or what?
Hey- I came over from Schlock and am posting as requested.
I’m *hoping* that the poll is a joke (haven’t read anything other than this post and the poll, so I can’t be sure)… but anyway, in case it *isn’t*….
PLEASE…..Be NICE to your poor kid- something like “Zaphod” is funny and all, but you just KNOW the kid will get nicknamed “Beeblebrox” and kidded about his two heads for the rest of his life…. either that, or have people going “huh???” all the time… and he’ll NEVER be able to get those cool magnets and pencils that are sold all over the place with names on them unless he special orders EVERYTHING….
I couldn’t put “Schlock eats it” as the last option, now could I?
Hmm…
Seriously, we’re not obligated to name the wee baby according to the poll results. It’s just for fun (and to see what people think, which is also fun). But I still want people to vote according to what they really think we should go with.
I went with Malach/Malachi.
Brayden is nice, but it’s got just that mix of ‘plain’ and ‘weird’ to make it one I see as being likely to be teased about quite a bit without having the upside of a cool weird name.
Zachary is plain, Zaphod is a humorous option, but not one I’d ever go with personally…Selwyn is a nice name, but seems just too prime a candidate for mocking in school, and such.
Malachi (Malach as well, but I like Malachi slightly better) is nice, though, because it’s unusual, memorable, perhaps even a little impressive sounding, and doesn’t strike me as prone to cause discomfort in school, at least not the maliciously intended sort.
Another Schlocker following your sig link.
When we started to have kids we had lots of “rules” we made up about the name:
1. Can be easily shortened to a nickname, (My wife Annie HATES being called Ann.)
2. Can be a “first generation” relatives name.
3. Boys had to be a Biblical name
I think we had about 10 of these rules. Many children later we’ve broken EVERY SINGLE ONE! With that said here’s my $.02 on the names here:
Zaphod: 40 years from now do you really think people will be remembering Hitchhikers guide? Will he want them to?
Brayden: I like it. However, easily shortened to “Bray,” . . . like a donkey. (Hey, I’m just saying kids will tease about anything.)
Malach/Malachi: Old Testament names are often tough. If he’s not Jewish he might be mistaken for being so.
Zachary: My vote went here. Shortens to “Zach,” which is pretty cool. He’ll probably always be at the end of the list when they alphabatize by first name.
Good luck and prayers for a safe and uneventful delivery.
Selwyn (6%)
I love responding to these.
Zaphod: It’s a semi-serious suggestion (but an unlikely final pick, I’ll have to admit). Every name has to start somewhere. Maybe we could start a trend? Literary use wouldn’t hurt that; how many people who hear the name Wendy immediately associate it with Peter Pan?
I love the Welsh spellings.
Brayden: I really don’t think most kids are that clever, or willing to put that much effort into an insult when there are easier ways to get the job done.
Malachi: Yeah, I really doubt my children will ever be Jewish. Mistaken for Jewish, though, that might run in the family. Might just be because I shun pork.
Zachary: Depending on the popularity of Power Ranger reruns, this might be the most teasable name. Wait, why do I remember that?
Selwyn: This one is my current favourite, and you didn’t say anything about it for me to respond to.
Thanks for the kind wishes.
Selwyn: Oops. I cut and pasted names from the poll results. Missed that one. I’m one of those uncultured Americans, so I look at Selwyn and think . . . huh? Is it a boy’s name? Is it s girl’s name? Is it a dish made with cinnamon and bread pudding?
I have a friend in Edinburg who’s daughter is named GEELUS (That’s the phonetic spelling, the Scottish spelling is, to quote my friend, “Just like it sounds of course!”)
Let’s just say, that I wouldn’t name any of MY kids that, but then that’s not saying much.
I voted Zaphod because I think it’s hilarious, and I see it’s winning so maybe others share my view… Malachi looks excellent, I think it is my REAL vote… how is it pronounced?
