Sony Madness

November 18, 2006

Now, I’m not sure if I caught the whole story. I was in a local Walmart the other night, and I noticed a couple of things.

  1. There was a tent set up outside, and a number of campers, presumably waiting for the release of the PlayStation 3 console.
  2. The staff inside were telling people who asked about it that they were not giving the few consoles they managed to get to the first people in the door (like an American Walmart did). Instead, they were going to have a draw.

So, these people waiting outside are waiting in the freezing cold for a chance to win and opportunity to spend close to $700?! What the hell is going on here?

Of course, I have my doubts about whether the people out in line knew this. I mean, would you wait in the cold if it had no bearing whatsoever on your chances at success?

Melonpool

October 17, 2006

Well, this is what I get for not paying attention. I’ve been ignoring Melonpool lately – no new comics to read for a while. However, I just noticed now, that the archives are back up. Huzzah, I can now read the strips I missed while I was offline before the reboot. And there’s a bit of new material too. :)

Well, it’s time. The long awaited second book in the Schlock Mercenary saga is available for preorder. For the first 24 hours (until 8:00 Mountain Time tomorrow morning), you have the amazing opportunity to pay a little extra ($10USD) to get a very groovy ink doodle on the inside of your book. People who just pay the $15USD for the book (very reasonable, considering that it’s full colour on shiny paper) will still get a signature. You know you want it. Buy it now. (And then wait patiently for the books to ship in November. This is a preorder, after all.) (more…)

Discworld

April 7, 2006

Not that anyone cares what I read (or, rather, not that anyone reads what I write), but lately I’ve been hooked on the Discworld books. I had a gift card, so I picked up Thief of Time as a lark. I read it, and went out at the first opportunity and bought Equal Rites, Small Gods, Reaper Man, and Night Watch. I just wish they were longer books, I can’t put them down and wind up plowing through them in a couple of days. With a style like Mr. Pratchett’s, of course, the re-read value will still be there. Woot!

April 4, 2006

I preordered the Schlock book. Signed and sketched, even. It’ll be sweet. I can’t wait to see what he draws. I may still have to track you down at a convention, Mr. Tayler. If my reaction to Schlock on the web is any indication, I may become hooked on Schlock on paper.
Now I just need to wait for the preorders on Book 2. My VISA is itching, Howard.

(Yes, I’m addicted. Everyone has their vice. I don’t smoke or drink, so I’ve gotta have my Schlock.)

Postscript April 07: The “track you down at a convention” line meant “track you down at a convention, and commission a piece of artwork.” On reread, the original probably sounded a little creepy.

Someone on the Schlock Mercenary forum (Nightstar) posted a link to quite possibly the funniest damn list I’ve ever read. It beat the Evil Overlord List, even. Check out 1000+ Things I am Not Allowed to Do in an RPG.

Just to grab one almost at random (they’re almost all funny, and 1000+ is NOT an exaggeration: 15. Plan B is not automatically twice as much gunpowder as Plan A.

And yes, I do intend to inflict as many of these as opportunity (and patience of others) will allow. I just need to find some victims.
